When the Storm Keeps Us Home: Making the Most of the Time Indoors

By Jo’Donna | The Insured Life

Hurricane Melissa is expected to make landfall in Jamaica tonight. The forecasts show heavy rainfall, strong winds, and possible flooding across the island. At this point, we can only pray and prepare. While we wait indoors for the storm to pass, this is not a time for panic- it's a time for reflection, togetherness, and doing the things we always said we were “too busy” to do.

Instead of worrying about when life will return to normal, let’s use this unexpected pause to do the things that truly matter.

1. Create Memories at Home – Food, Family, and Laughter

With school and work on pause, many Jamaicans are staying inside with their families. This is the perfect time to cook traditional meals, bond, and make memories.

In my home, I’ve made fried dumplings, saltfish fritters, and bulgar porridge with my 7-year-old daughter, and soon, fresh June plum juice with ginger, the Jamaican way.

My daughters are also asking for pepper pot soup, so let’s see if the pot gets bubbling today. These little moments become the memories we cherish long after the storm passes.

2. Use This Time to Learn, Create, and Organize

Storm days don’t have to be wasted days. While the winds blow outside, we can strengthen ourselves on the inside.

Here’s how I’ll be using my time:

  • Rewriting and organizing my work notes

  • Writing new blog articles and financial education content

  • Creating graphics and social media posts

  • Exploring online courses to increase my skills

  • Spending time in Bible study and prayer

  • Enjoying quiet moments with my family

Instead of filling our minds with anxiety, let’s fill them with knowledge, creativity, and peace.

3. Reach Out and Check In on Loved Ones

Even if we are safe at home, someone else might not be.

This storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds, especially in rural areas. I’ll be checking in with my relatives and friends, especially those in deep rural St. Thomas, Jamaica, including my grandmother.

A simple phone call or message can bring comfort to someone who feels alone or afraid.

4. Slow Down and Do the Things That Matter

Life is often fast, demanding, and overwhelming. We rush from work to home, from errands to deadlines. But when a storm forces us to pause, we remember what truly matters.

Use this time to:

  • Pray and spend time with God

  • Talk and laugh with your family

  • Cook, read, journal, or simply rest

  • Organize your home or finances

  • Plan for life after the storm- mentally and financially

These are not wasted hours. These are sacred moments.

Final Thoughts

We don’t know the full impact Hurricane Melissa will have on Jamaica. But while we wait, we can choose peace over panic, purpose over idleness, and love over fear.

Storms remind us that life is fragile, but also that family, faith, and preparation are powerful.

Stay safe. Stay dry. Stay hopeful.
